Runner-Up: Marcy Walker
as Liza Colby |
|
|
This woman needs a
special award for doing so much clean-up work in so many areas of the show. It seemed that
whenever a plot was bogging down, TPTB would just throw Marcy into the mix and hope that
things would get better-- the Jake/Allie/David triangle, the Kelsey/Scott/Gillian/Ryan
quadrangle, and even for a moment there the Camille storyline. And what is *amazing* is
that it invariably worked! When Liza got into the Jake/Allie/David thing, it took on a
whole new life; when Liza grabbed the reins and sorted out the boring teen mess, she had
some great scenes with Kelsey. OK, even *she* couldn't save the Camille fiasco, and TPTB
pulled her away quickly (right after the divorce hearing)--but 2 out of 3 is a *very* good
track record |

Surprise Twist
When Olivia Birkelund made her brief
return as Arlene, the resurrection not only shocked AMC viewers, but caught her on-screen
adversary off guard, as well! "The last I had heard, honest, was that they had killed
(the character)," Marcy Walker (Liza) insists. "I remember thinking,'That's a
gutsy move. I guess they really wanted Arlene dead.' Then I thought, well, with everything
that's been going on with Kelly Ripa (who plays Hayley, and has been co-hosting Live With
Regis, and is pregnant), maybe they were just going to send Hayley off to prison."
Tsk-tsk Marcy. A Santa Barbara and Guilding Light grad like you should very well know that
on soaps, you can't keep a bad woman down. "When I read (about Arlene's return) in my
script, I said, 'Oh, this is so cool,'" the actress recalls. "We had been
playing that she really had been killed, so it was neat that they brought her back - and
on the very day that Hayley confessed!" |

Leaders among Leading Men
Marcy Walker tells all about
her handsome AMC co-stars
David Canary
(Adam/Stuart) "He loves to sing, and when I learned that, I understood him really
well, because he's like that as a person. He's a melody. He makes you feel like the best
music you've every heard. He's gentle and very giving, and he's a good person. I have a
lot of respect for him and a love for him because he really reaches out to you when he
knows you need it."
Michael E. Knight
(Tad): "He's twisted. Crazy. He's very smart, but he's got this clown in him, and
it escapes whether he likes it or not. He's an incredible mimic, which no one would know
unless you really get him going. You can sit and talk with him about world politics, and
then he'll throw out some of the funniest stuff you've every seen."
Michael Lowry
(Jake): "He's one of the best subtle actors we have. Yoda - that's what I call
him. He's going to kill me for telling you, too. I said to him one time, 'I don't know
what it is about you, but you've got this quiet nature, and then when you speak, you say
something short, sweet and poignant. You're like Yoda." |

Gown & Out in Santa Barbara
Marcy Walker "addresses"
her most famous wedding attire
In 1988, Santa Barbara fans rejoiced in
the marriage of Eden Capwell and Cruz Castillo. But while viewers remember the event for
the beauty of the location and the delight that they felt for two of their favorite
characters united in love, the actress who portrayed the blushing bride remembers the
nuptials for other reasons. "I wore this abominable 400-pound dress!", exclaims
Walker, with SB groom A Martinez (Cruz). "I couldn't sit down or eat or anything for
weeks on end." Fortunately, a kind-hearted member of the crew took mercy on the
confined star. "One of our property men would come over with this apple box,"
she explains, "lift up my dress and shove it between my legs so I could have
somewhere to sit down." |
|
Between Love And Hate
What with Liza's
come-here, go-away attitude, it's kind of hard to figure out her feelings for ex-husband
Adam. Marcy Walker confesses that even she's not sure what's going through her character's
mind. "I don't really know how Liza feels about Adam. Even when she could maybe win
him back, I don't know how she would feel about that because she hasn't really dealt with
the fact that she's mad at him. I don't know what they're going to do with me because I
haven't had a conversation so that I know what the next step is. But I know that we're
dealing with the storyline now where Tad's figuring out that she's abusing their
friendship. Getting HIM mad at Liza, I don't like that very much." |

FYI
Born: November 26 in Paducah, KY
Speed reader: Walker attended Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, CA - from
which she graduated in just three years.
High on Jack: Among the other AMC males discussed here, Walker hopes for more scenes
with Walt Willey (Jackson). "Not only would I have great lighting, because he's so
tall, but he's got wonderful rhythm and is very funny!"
Battle of the blondes: Walker co-starred with General Hospital's Genie Francis (Laura)
in the 1995 TV movie Terror in the Shadows.
Home Sweet Home: Walker lives in Wilton, CT with fourth husband Doug Smith and son
Taylor, whose dad is previuos hubby, Stephen Collins.

Light's Tangie Hill from 1993-95.

time].
What is the most romantic thing Doug has done? Oh, goodness - he has done so much.
I'll come home and he'll have made me dinner...His romanticism is shown every day - it's
not like any one big thing he does.

If Doug got a tattoo, what would it be? He wouldn't get one. Mm, mm.
The first thing Doug does in the morning is... He makes coffee with beans from
Dunkin' Donuts.

Rating The Soap Star Hairstyles
Marcy Walker. She loves Adam, she hates
Adam, she loves Adam...it's very hard to keep up with Liza (Marcy Walker) and her
ever-changing emotions these days on All My Children. (Though we grant you, Adam is far
from the easiest man to get along with - or understand!) One thing that is consistent -
and consistently great looking - is Marcy's hairstyle. Long locks are less cumbersome and
shapelier, thanks to up-front graduation. Finally, bold platinum color is the icing on the
cake - and it also helps to thicken up fine strands.
This style works best if: * Your hair is
fine to medium in texture and medium to thick in volume * Your hair is straight or has a
slight wave.
This style requires: *Daily blow-dry
styling. Apply hairdressing creme to towel-dried hair and, working from an off-center
part, blow-out over a large round brush. Curve ends under as you go, holding the brush
vertically in front to distinguish those graduated pieces. Or, you could spend a few
minutes with a large-barreled curling iron to achieve the same results.
This style is not recommended if: * You
are petite or have very delicate features; this much hair will overwhelm you. * Your hair
is ultra-coarse or curly - it will look bushy, not beautiful. |

Bye Bye Barbara
Sandwiched in-between her two stints as
AMC's Liza, Marcy Walker paid a seven-year visit to Santa Barbara, the now-defunct soap on
which she played rebellious rich girl Eden Capwell. And although the actress left SB two
years before its finale, she nonetheless felt the pain of its 1993 termination. "When
I heard it was being canceled, it was brutal," Walker shares. "It was like
someone put a dagger in my heart." Indeed, despite the prestige which NBC reaped from
the heaps of critical praise and Emmys awarded to SB, the serial's so-so ratings - coupled
with disruptive backstage squabbles among its executives - led to its demise. "I
understnd all the reasons behind it," Walker says. "More than the ratings, it
was very political. But darn it, what a good show it was. I was like, 'Why is this going
goodbye?' It was like putting to bed a very dear friend." SID 10/17/00 |
